  • September 21: Samford University student Rex Copeland was killed by his debate coach, William Slagle after a confrontation at his Inverness apartment. He mailed a confession and went into hiding, appearing on America's Most Wanted before surrendering. He was convicted of murder in 1990 and sentenced to life. [1]

  • December 16: Federal judge Robert Vance was killed by a bomb mailed to his home in Mountain Brook. Walter Leroy Moody was convicted in both federal and state courts and is on Alabama's death row.
