Matsuyama was the name of Louis Clark's country estate near Chalkville. The house, completed in 1912, was designed by Wheelock & Wheelock architects.

Clark sold the property to the State of Alabama at a steep discount in 1918. It was used as the site of the Alabama State Training School for Girls, built largely with WPA labor and opened in 1937.
