Michael Harriot (born October 7, 1972 in Hartsville, South Carolina) is a senior writer for The Root, a novelist, poet, spoken word artist, and a popular cultural critic on Twitter.
Harriot grew up in Hartsville, South Carolina. He was home-schooled in early grades and graduated from Hartsville High School. He completed a bachelor's degree in mass communications and media studies at Auburn University in 1995 and a master's in international business administration from Florida State University.
Harriot covered the build-up to the 2008 Olympics for The Washington Post. In 2012 he covered the presidential campaign of Illinois Senator Barack Obama and moved to Birmingham as a base of operations. Since then, Harriot launched the podcast, "The Black One" in 2013 and founded an online community called "NegusWhoRead" in 2016. That year he finished 17th of 96 invited participants in the Individual World Poetry Slam.
In 2019 Harriot signed a two-book deal with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. On June 4, 2020 Harriot was arrested by Birmingham police for violating a curfew order issued during the 2020 George Floyd protests.
