Midfield (incorporated in 1953) is a city of 5,263 on 2.65 square miles in western Jefferson County. The city was named for its location midway between Birmingham and Bessemer.

After informal discussions a Midfield Citizens Committee was formed to petition residents for a referendum on incorporation. The result was in favor and Jefferson County Probate Court Judge Tom Garner signed the incorporation on October 6, 1953. At that time, the new city had a population of 2,025 residents served by three churches, with a school under construction. The first Mayor of Midfield and Midfield Board of Aldermen was elected on November 17 of that year and took office in April 1954.
