Montevallo

Montevallo (Settled in 1815, Incorporated in 1848) is a college town in Shelby County. It serves as the home of the University of Montevallo, a public liberal arts university with around 3,000 students. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city of Montevallo is 4,825.

The location was first settled by Jesse Wilson, who had served under Andrew Jackson in the Creek Indian War. The settlement came to be known as Wilson's Hill after him, and that was the name given the first post office in 1829. When the city was incorporated in 1848, it was given the new pseudo-Italian name "Montevallo" for monte (mountain) and valle (valley).

Montevallo's mayor, elected in 2004, is Sharon Anderson. The five-member Montevallo City Council is made up of Dana Byrd, Willie Goldsmith, Hollie Cost, Greg Pendelton, and Becky Cox-Rodgers.

Montevallo forged an informal sister city relationship with Echizen Town, Japan and made the relationship official during a visit from that city's mayor, council president and economic development director in October 2008.

Montevallo is located at the junction of Highway 119 from Alabaster and Highway 25 from Harpersville.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.6 mi². 19.6 km², virtually all of which is dry land.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 4,825 people, 1,711 households, and 946 families residing in the city. The population density was 638.5/mi². There were 1,897 housing units at an average density of 251.0/mi².

The racial makeup of the city was 73% White and 26% Black. 1.6% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 1,711 households out of which 25.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.4% were married couples living together, 15.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 44.7% were non-families. 30.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.96.

In the city the population was spread out with 18.3% under the age of 18, 36.0% from 18 to 24, 21.8% from 25 to 44, 14.1% from 45 to 64, and 9.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 23 years. For every 100 females there were 78.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 72.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $30,541, and the median income for a family was $40,164. Males had a median income of $36,222 versus $23,705 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,468. About 14.5% of families and 24.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 27.6% of those under age 18 and 21.5% of those age 65 or over.
