Rich Wingo

Richard Allen Wingo (born July 16, 1956 in Elkhart, Indiana) is a former Alabama Crimson Tide and NFL linebacker.

From Pee-Wee to high school, Wingo led every team he played for in tackles. He was recruited to Alabama by coach Bear Bryant and played from 1974 to 1978. To cap his senior season, Wingo helped stuff Penn State's four goal line plays to preserve a Tide victory and earn an AP National Championship in the 1979 Sugar Bowl. The sequence has passed into legend (and Daniel Moore's canvas) as "The Goal Line Stand".

Wingo was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the 7th round of the 1979 NFL Draft. He excelled in his first season, and was named the Packer's Rookie of the Year and team MVP. Wingo played a total of five seasons in the NFL. In 69 games he recorded four interceptions and one sack.

After his playing career he has worked as a strength coach at Alabama until 1989 and later as president of AIG Baker Real Estate. He is currently chief operating officer of United Assurance Corporation.

Wingo and his wife, Cheri, have two sons, Jake and Luke. He has served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church of Tuscaloosa
