The Riverview Wastewater Treatment Plant is a sewer plant constructed by the Birmingham Water Works adjacent to the Cahaba River near U. S. Highway 280. It is currently licensed to release 1.5 million gallons of treated water per day into the river, but has applied to double that amount.

In December 2007 the Jefferson County Commission approved the sale of the facility to Shelby County's Government Utilities Services Corporation (GUSC) for $22.9 million. The funds for the purchase were provided to Shelby County directly by Southwest Water, a private company which will take possession of the facility after the sale. Southwest also owns the Shelby County Wastewater Treatment Plant at Greystone. GUSC will retain ownership of sewer lines in public rights-of-way. Jefferson County retains an option to purchase the lines within the county back from GUSC.
