Samuel J. Mitchell (born November 2, 1921 in Arkansas; died January 29, 2011 in Vestavia Hills) was an English professor at in Howard College of Arts and Sciences at Samford University for thirty-six years.
Mitchell earned his bachelor of science and master of arts degrees at the University of Texas and continued his studies there and at the University of London. He joined the faculty of what was then Howard College in 1952.
Mitchell and his wife, Lizette, were founding members of the Alabama Council of Teachers of English. He was president of that group three times, and also serves as president of the Association of College English Teachers of Alabama and was active in the National College Teachers of English, the Conference on College Composition and Communication, the South Central Renaissance Conference, the South Atlantic Modern Language Association, and Phi Kappa Phi.
