2000: The Birmingham Pledge mural was dedicated at the Birmingham Police Department's downtown headquarters.
1996: The Olympic soccer countdown clock was auctioned off at Legion Field.
1981: Baseball player Connor Robertson was born in Tuscaloosa.
1969: Pastor John Cantelow was born in Birmingham.
1963: Dwight and Floyd Armstrong attended the first integrated class at Graymont Elementary School. President Kennedy sent the National Guard to escort black students into West End High School and Ramsay High School.
1940: Football player Buck Buchanan was born.
1907: Pitcher Harry Coveleski made his major league debut with the Philadelphia Phillies.
1901: Birmingham became the first city in the South to be rated "Class 1" by the National Board of Fire Underwriters.
