Cityville Block 121 is a $35 million1 mixed-use development currently under construction on Block 121 in midtown Birmingham. The project is being developed by a partnership of Inland American Communities, Inc. of Atlanta, Georgia and Birmingham's Corporate Realty Development.
Inland American purchased the 2.5-acre property for $4.3 million in August 2007. Originally slated for a hotel/office tower and condominiums, the project was adapted for apartments and retail due to changing market conditions. The current proposal involves 255 apartment units (52 studios, 124 1-bed, 1-bath units, and 79 2-bed, 2-bath units). The apartments are provided with wood flooring and carpeted bedrooms, granite countertops, and designer lighting. Residents will have access to a club room, internet café, fitness center, swimming pool and secured parking in the development's 360-space enclosed deck.
The project includes 21,000 square feet of retail space, primarily facing 20th Street South. The architect for the project is Niles Bolton & Associates of Atlanta, Georgia. Golden Construction is the general contractor.
Demolition of the remaining structures on the block was begun in December 2008 and a ceremonial groundbreaking for construction was held on April 29, 2009. Completion of the residential portion is expected in August 2010 with retail spaces built out as leases are signed.
