Stephen Murphy
Stephen L. Murphy is the Director of Risk Management and Regulatory Compliance for Hill Crest Behavioral Health Services, and a candidate for Birmingham City Council District 2 in the 2017 Birmingham municipal election.
Muprhy is one of nine children of plumber and Birmingham firefighter Billy Murphy and his wife, Rosalyn. He grew up in Birmingham and attended Jackson-Olin High School. While a freshman there, his father passed away and the family went through a short period of homelessness. He completed high school and enrolled at UAB where he earned bachelor's degree in social work. While in college, Murphy served as a foster care social worker for the Alabama Department of Human Resources and as a medical caseworker at UAB's 1917 Clinic. He completed his master's in social work at the University of Alabama, and also performed an internship at the Birmingham VA Medical Center in 2014. Since then he has been a social worker at St Vincent's East Medical Center and Hill Crest.
As a candidate for City Council, Murphy hopes to promote community involvement, public safety, education and economic growth in District 2.
