The Stough Cross

The Stough Cross is a crucifix created by artist Cordray Parker for the Episcopal Church Women of the Diocese of Alabama as a memorial to Furman Stough, 8th Episcopal Bishop of Alabama. The work was commissioned in 2006 and dedicated on April 8, 2008.

The sculpture was conceived in two parts, a naturalistic bronze cross and wreath paired with an abstract silver corpus. In its placement in the sun-filled Carpenter House chapel, the cross faces the Rector's Garden at the Cathedral Church of the Advent while the corpus faces the interior and is seen primarily in silhouette. The design of the corpus was based on a drawing made for a sculpture intended for a church in Brooklyn, New York. It is posed in the figure of an "S", recalling Gothic images of the crucifixion. The figures arms, outlined in thin wire, curve down in an attitude of welcome and grace.
