Objections
- Art Hanes, Jr has contacted me regarding major errors of fact and inadequacy of historical context in this article and the one on himself. He'll be providing me a list of objections/corrections soon. I can certainly see plenty of room for improvement. I'll review the sources cited by McWhorter for specific claims and try to better cite those. Some of them may be contradicted (in print, or in unpublished family histories) and, where appropriate, I'll try to indicate where there may be controversy. (Hanes considers McWhorter's scholarship to be "atrocious") If anyone finds some good independent sources to flesh out and contextualize this biography, that would be most helpful. --Dystopos 13:11, 10 September 2009 (PDT)
- If you're feeling particularly ambitious, it turns out the Birmingham Public Library has eight boxes of his papers and two microfilm reels of newspaper clippings, both covering his mayoral term. I also got many results from this Google Book search. Searching for "hanes birmingham" at the New York Times resulted in a lot of hits, but none of them available for free. These are the most relevant articles I found at Time.com, which both contain some direct quotes from Hanes:
- Nation: That's What'll Happen (Dec. 22, 1961)
- Nation: Changing the Rules (Nov. 23, 1962)
