* I don't know the details, except that the ship was hit by aerial torpedoes and strafed with gunfire. The hole town in the port side of the hull caused her to capsize. Most of those killed died below deck during the days it took rescuers to reach them. I got the blurb on Ellsberry from [http://members.iinet.net.au/~gduncan/1941.html here]. I suppose it is possible he was downed by gunfire before the ship itself capsized.   • I don't know the details, except that the ship was hit by aerial torpedoes and strafed with gunfire. The hole town in the port side of the hull caused her to capsize.
