I have to say I found Hemphill obnoxiously self righteous in this memoir. The ending where he congratulates himself on selling his prejudiced father's house to a Black couple is particularly annoying as he conveniently leaves out what a bad neighborhood that house was in. Hemphill makes it sound like he righted the scales of justice, when he really just unloaded a worn out old house in a changing (for the worse!) neighborhood.
