Virginia Mae Schmitt

Virginia Mae Schmitt (born April 20, 1917; died September 24, 2014) was a 79-year veteran of community theater in Birmingham.

Schmitt began acting in 1935 with the teen theater club at Woodlawn High School. She debuted with the Little Theater in 1941 and with the Town & Gown Theater in 1950 and later as a member of the Seasoned Performers. She returned to the state in 2010 for a Birmingham Festival Theatre performance of "Almost, Maine". Her final role was with Woodlawn United Methodist Church in 2013. She also worked as a secretary at Goslin-Birmingham Manufacturing Company and at UAB. In retirement she managed a food bank at Woodlawn United Methodist.

Scmitt was a mentor to generations of actors, including Fannie Flagg. She died in 2014.
