Wylam Oaks
Wylam Oaks is a residential subdivision developed in 2008 by Habitat for Humanity of Greater Birmingham on a site fronting Lexington Street to either side of 8th Avenue in Wylam.
The site, a former storage yard for a railroad maintenance facility, was donated by U. S. Steel. Ground was broken on September 26, 2007 with infrastructure work provided by the City of Birmingham. It is the largest single development undertaken by the Birmingham Habitat group.
The first phase of construction will provide 38 new houses and began on September 12, 2008. Another 17 lots are available for future construction on the site. U. S. Steel employees and United Steelworkers members are volunteering their time for one of the homes. Other companies sending labor include J. R. Prewitt & Associates, Barfield Murphy Shank & Smith, and the Birmingham Habitat Outlet Store].
