1966 Jets-Oilers exhibition game
The 1966 Jets-Oilers exhibition game was an American Football League (AFL) exhibition game played between the New York Jets and the Houston Oilers of the AFL's Eastern Division on August 13, 1966, at Legion Field.
The planned merger of the AFL with the National Football League had been announced in June.
The game was organized and promoted by the Birmingham Kiwanis Foundation as a fund-raiser for charity.
Weeb Ewbank's Jets won the game over Wally Lemm's Oilers by a score of 16-10. Jets star quarterback Joe Namath suffered an injury to his right knee during the game, forcing Mike Taliaferro to take over through the first two games of the regular season.
KPRC-TV aired the game live in Houston. WOR-TV broadcast the game on a delayed basis in the New York market.
