1st Avenue South (Woodlawn) is the section of 1st Avenue South running through downtown Birmingham's Woodlawn neighborhood, between 5th Avenue North at the edge of Crestwood North, and 65th Street North, at the edge of the East Lake neighborhood. In the 1880s the street was known as Woodlawn Avenue.

2024 Woodlawn Road Diet

In 2024 the 4-lane section of 1st Avenue South between 55th and 59th Streets was reconfigured as a 2-lane neighborhood street with a row of parallel parking spaces protecting a bicycle lane. At the same time, two traffic lights at 55th Street and 56th Street, were converted to 4-way stops. The temporary street-calming project, dubbed the Woodlawn Road Diet, was initiated by Faris Zaibaq and Ethan Madison as a service project connected to their participation in the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship of Alabama and drawing on their interests as officers of the Alabama Urbanists Coalition. Birmingham Department of Transportation director James Fowler, Woodlawn Neighborhood Association president Jason Avery, and REV Birmingham supported the project's planning. Volunteers from the UAB Heersink School of Medicine participated in installing new striping and signage and in cleaning up litter.

The sidewalks and bicycle lane enhance a section of the "5th Avenue South and Georgia Road Connector" or "Woodlawn Trail", which is part of the Jones Valley Corridor of the Red Rock Ridge & Valley Trail System.
