2024 AHAA Symposium

The 2024 Symposium of the Association of Historians of American Art was the 8th biennial symposium of the -based Association of Historians of American Art (AHSAA), held in Birmingham on October 1719, 2024 and hosted by the Birmingham Museum of Art and the UAB Department of Art and Art History. Most sessions were held at the museum's Steiner Auditorium, with Saturday's program held at the Alys Stephens Center. The official conference lodging was the Tutwiler Hotel.

The symposium was co-chaired by Katelyn Crawford of the Birmingham Museum of Art, Jessica Dallow of UAB, and Kathleen Spies, from Birmingham-Southern College. The bulk of the program consisted of themed sessions at which three or four scholars presented recent work.

  • Thursday, October 17:
    • 2:00–4:00: self-guided tours of Joe Minter's "African Village in America"
    • 5:00-5:30: welcome remarks
    • 5:30–6:30: panel discussion celebrating the 10th anniversary of the journal Panorama
    • 6:30–8:30: reception and viewing of BMA galleries, including exhibitions of the work of John Rhoden and Hayward Oubre
  • Friday, October 18:
    • 8:45–10:45: Session I: "Meaning, Materials, and Materiality", moderated by Jessica Dallow
    • 11:00–12:30: Session II: "Home/Place", moderated by Kathleen Spies
    • 2:00–4:00: Session III: "Imagined American Wests", moderated by Graham Boettcher
    • 4:15–5:15: Session IV: "Rethinking the Survey: Place-Based Approaches to Art History " workshop
    • 6:00–7:00: Panel discussion at Marc Steel Building in conjunction with the exhibition "Joe Minter is Here"
  • Saturday, October 19:
    • 9:30–11:00: Session V: "Transnational and Transcultural Connections", moderated by Rachel Stephens
    • 12:15–2:15: Session VI: "Dirty: The Detritus of American Art", moderated by John Davis
    • 2:30–3:45: Session VII: "Expanding the Field of American Sculpture" round table
    • 4:00–5:00: reception and viewing of Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts galleries
