46th Street Baptist Church
46th Street Baptist Church is located at 230 85th Street North in East Lake. It was organized in 1914 and located at several sites prior to moving to East Lake. It was known as St. John Baptist Church until 1918 when the present name was chosen. In May 1950, the church's building burned down. During reconstruction, the congregation began to worship with Mt. Zion Baptist Church (Drennen Quaters) until the new church building was completed in October 1956 on the corner of 16th Avenue North at 1532 Cahaba Street in East Birmingham. The church worshiped here until June 10, 1990 when the building collapsed.
Following this the congregation worshiped for one week at the Mt Pilgrim Baptist District Association Center in North Birmingham and then for seven months at Peace Baptist Church.
Because of its role in the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights, it was recognized as a "movement church" by the Birmingham Historical Society.
It relocated to its present site, the former home of East Lake Alliance Church, on February 2, 1992.
In 2001 Pastor Frederick Whitt resigned and many members left with him to found Agape Missionary Baptist Church which also located in East Lake.
In 2006 Pastor Carols D. Williams resigned and several members left with him to found Greater Grace Baptist Church.
