Context
In 871, nine battles were fought between the Danes and Wessex before peace was made. Rhodri Mawr of Gwynedd inherited Seisyllwig, thus most of Wales was united under his rule. Tønsberg, the oldest surviving town in the Nordic countries, was founded. Svatopluk I became king of Great Moravia.
Notable deaths in 871 included King Bagsecg and King Ethelred of Wessex.
