Altamont Apartments
The Altamont Apartments is an 8-story brick and limestone-clad apartment building located at 2827–2835 Highland Avenue South, at the corner of 29th Street South in Birmingham's Highland Park neighborhood.
The apartments were developed as luxury residences for single businessmen and young families. Amenities included a full-service restaurant with room service and a ballroom, as well as full plumbing and telephone service to each unit.
Architect Joseph Salie designed the building, which was completed in 1925 on the former site of the W. C. Steward residence, which had been moved to 11th Avenue South in 1906. The main entrance was through a paved courtyard at the center of the H-shaped plan and raised 5 steps above the sidewalk.
Before 2002 the apartment building was acquired and renovated into the 95-room Greenbriar at the Altamont retirement home, operated by Noland Health Services. A covered parking deck was added at the rear of the building.
