James Benjamin "Benny" Nelson (born April 1, 1941 in Gadsden) was a professional football player.
Nelson played collegiately for the Alabama Crimson Tide. In 1964, Nelson was inducted into the Walk of Fame at Denny Chimes in Tuscaloosa, and was an all-SEC player that year. Joe Namath's pass to Nelson is depicted in Daniel Moore's painting "Third Saturday in October".
In 1964 Nelson was drafted by the Detroit Lions of the NFL and by the Houston Oilers of the AFL. He played one season (1964) for the Oilers.
