Civitan International Research Center
The Civitan International Research Center (CIRC) is an interdisciplinary research facility operated by UAB Heersink School of Medicine which focuses on developing treatments for developmental disorders, including autism, Down syndrome, Rett syndrome and other brain disorders. It is located at 1719 6th Avenue South. The center was founded in 1989. Its present facility was dedicated on July 14, 1992.
The center was established with a $20 million pledge from Civitan International, which has continued to support its programs. It has been led by neurobiologist Craig Powell since 2018.
A site-specific multimedia installation, "Sentient Matrix", was commissioned from artist Sara Garden Armstrong by the Alabama-Mississippi Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society to honor contractor Miller Gorrie in the building's central atrium. Armstrong consulted with neurobiologist Tara DeSilva on the design of the piece, which is inspired by the workings of the human central nervous system.
