Hazel Gore
Hazel Mansell Gore (born May 31, 1923 in Australia; died July 14, 2001 in Birmingham) was a gynecologic pathologist and UAB professor.
Mansell enrolled at the University of Sydney in 1940 and was placed in an accelerated medical degree program designed to fill the need for doctors during World War II. She completed her M.D. in 1945 and practiced in Australia for a few years before moving to New York City in 1951 to study gynecologic pathology. In 1953 she was hired as a research assistant to A. T. Hertig at Harvard Medical School and collaborated with him on a series of pioneering articles on "Tumors of the Female Organ" between 1956 and 1961. By 1968 she was employed in the New England Trophoblastic Disease Center in Boston.
In 1969 Gore was recruited by UAB's Departments of Pathology and Obstetrics/Gynecology. She remained at the University until 2001 except for a three-year stint as Director of Cytopathology at Rochester General Hospital in New York. After her retirement in 1994 she continued to teach and publish as a volunteer.
Gore died in 2001 following a coronary bypass procedure. She was inducted into the Alabama Women's Hall of Fame in 2014.
