Jim Naftel

James P. Naftel II is an attorney and former Jefferson County Probate Court judge.

Naftel earned his bachelor's degree at the University of Mississippi in 1994 and his law degree from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1998. His private practice was focused on estate administration and planning. He was elected a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel in 2019, and chaired the probate section of the Birmingham Bar Association.

Naftel was appointed by Governor Kay Ivey to fill the unexpired term of Alan King on June 30, 2020.

Naftel did not seek re-election in 2024, and accepted a position with the Montgomery-based Alabama Law Institute. Naftel revised and updated Thomas Nettles IV's textbook Alabama Probate Law and Procedure: The Administration of Estates.
