Michael Johnson (BWW)
Michael Johnson is a certified public accountant, a retired U.S. Marine Corps colonel, and former general manager of the Birmingham Water Works.
Johnson earned his bachelor of science in accounting from the University of Alabama. He also completed a master's degree in taxation through National University of San Diego, California, and a master's in business administration at the University of North Alabama.
Johnson served in the U.S. Marine Corps and Marine Corps Reserve, with eight years on the commanding general's staff for the 4th Marine Aircraft Wing in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Johnson also worked as a revenue agent for the U.S. Internal Revenue Service and as a tax auditor for an accounting firm. He succeeded Mac Underwood as finance director for the City of Birmingham in 2001.
Johnson began working at the Water Works in 2008 as an assistant to Underwood, responsible for finance and operations. When Underwood resigned in December 2018, Johnson was appointed as interim general manager. He was offered the position permanently in March 2019.
Johnson retired from the utility in 2024.
