Mount Olive, also spelled Mt Olive, is a 9.5 square-mile unincorporated community of 3,957 persons in Jefferson County. It is bordered on the south and the east by Gardendale, which has absorbed several parts of Mount Olive into its corporate limits by annexation. Running along part of the border between Mt Olive and Gardendale is Interstate 65. Eventually, part of the planned Interstate 422 will cut through northwestern sections of Mount Olive.

Mount Olive is part of the Jefferson County School System, and is served by Mount Olive Elementary School. The community's ZIP code is 35117.


As of the Census of 2000, there were 3,957 people, 1,499 households, and 1,221 families residing in the community. The population density was 417.6/mi². There were 1,553 housing units at an average density of 163.9/mi². The racial makeup of the community was 98.10% White, 0.08% Black, 0.33% Native American, 0.05% Asian, and 1.44% from two or more races. 0.78% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 1,499 households out of which 34.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 72.1% were married couples living together, 6.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 18.5% were non-families. 16.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 2.95.

In the community the population was spread out with 23.5% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 31.0% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 98.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.6 males.

The median income for a household in the community was $48,291, and the median income for a family was $52,425. Males had a median income of $41,250 versus $27,021 for females. The per capita income for the community was $21,311. About 4.0% of families and 4.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.8% of those under age 18 and 9.0% of those age 65 or over.

The Jefferson County Board of Equalization evaluated 2,055 homes in Mt Olive and determined that the average market value for 2007 was $152,598, a 7.0% increase since 2006.
