Munchies Food Store
Munchies Food Store was a gas station and convenience store located at 4100 5th Avenue South on the northeast corner of the intersection of 41st Street across from the entrance to Avondale Park. It was owned by Randy Shunnarah.
Part of the building housed a "777 Jackpot" gaming area until late 2006 when the Alabama Supreme Court clarified the state's anti-gambling law.
The store began selling fresh produce in 2014 as part of REV Birmingham's "Urban Food Project".
In 2015 Munchies Food Store was raided as part of "Operation T-Bone", a multi-jurisdictional investigation of Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) fraud led by the Jefferson County District Attorney's office. According to authorities the store property would be subject to "forfeiture and condemnation."
The business survived until 2020, closing during the COVID-19 pandemic. Shunnarah took out the gas pumps and leased the space to Chris Holloman, who opened his Munchie's on 5th bar and grill there in February 2022.
Prior to November 2024, the south wall of the building, facing the park, was painted with a mural entitled "Wall of Respect".
