Navy Cargo Handling Battalion 12
Navy Cargo Handling Battalion 12 (NCHB-12) is a U. S. Naval Reserve unit headquartered in Bessemer and part of the Naval Expeditionary Logistics Support Force. NCHB 12 maintains two surface companies and a maintenance company in Bessemer, as well as surface companies in Atlanta and Chattanooga and an air cargo company in Atlanta. The Battalion is tasked with loading and unloading Navy and Marine Corps cargo in maritime prepositioning and merchant breakbulk or container ships in all environments, and with operating associated temporary ocean cargo terminals. NCHB-12 has been awarded the Mayfield (Battle E) Award four times (1994, 1995, 2001, 2002).
The Naval Expeditionary Logistics Support Force's headquarters and sole active unit are based in Williamsburg, Virginia.
During "Operation Iraqi Freedom" the Battalion served the Port Group Delta in Kuwait with reservists rotating duty in 6-month tours.
