Peter Pappas

Peter G. Pappas is the William E. Dismukes Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the UAB Heersink School of Medicine, and a long-time principal of the school's Mycoses Study Group, conducting clinical trials for treatment of invasive fungal infections, and co-director of its Mycology Reference Laboratory.

Pappas earned his bachelor's degree in general studies at the University of Alabama, and played tight end for the Alabama Crimson Tide football team. He completed his M.D. at UAB in 1978 and spent the next five years at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle completing an internship, residency, and fellowship in infectious diseases. He was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine as an internist in 1981 and as a practitioner in the field of infectious diseases in 1984.

Pappas began his academic career at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, working at UNC Health Southeastern in Wilmington.

Pappas returned to UAB as a researcher and the first Tinsley Harrison Clinical Scholar in 1988, initially focusing on invasive mycoses as factors in HIV infections and organ transplants. He was made a full professor in 2001. He was named the founding director of UAB's Antimicrobial Stewardship Program in 2008. He was offered the Dismukes professorship in 20212.

In a long and productive career in research, Pappas has served as principal investigator for the multi-site Mycoses Study Group Education and Research Consortium, as well as for TRANSNET transplant centers. He was later made co-principal investigator for the national Organ Transplant Infection Detection and Prevention Program (OTIP).
