Royal Restaurant was a seafood, steak and oyster house located at 1600 2nd Avenue North (the corner of 16th Street and 2nd Avenue North). The restaurant was opened in 1972 by Robert Papan, a native of Yugoslavia and former maître d' at Top of the Sixes on the 41st floor of the 666 Fifth Avenue building in New York City.
Papan died on March 7, 1975 in a car crash on the northbound side of the Red Mountain Expressway when struck head-on by a wrong-way driver traveling at nearly 100 miles per hour. After his death, his wife Ernestine continued to operate the restaurant.
