Ruth Appelhof

Ruth Stevens Appelhof (born February 14, 1945; died April 2, 2020 in East Hampton, New York) was an art historian, educator and museum curator who served as curator of paintings and sculpture at the Birmingham Museum of Art and as a professor of art history at Auburn University and UAB.

Appelhof earned her bachelor's, master's and PhD in art history from Syracuse University. She taught at Syracuse and completed a fellowship at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1980 and spent another four years as curator of exhibitions at Syracuse before coming to Birmingham.

Appelhof capped her career as executive director of Guild Hall of East Hampton, New York from 1999 to 2016. She died from leukemia in 2020.
