UAB Office of Access and Engagement
The UAB Office of Access and Engagement is an administrative unit at UAB responsible for supporting and promoting the success of all of the university's students, faculty and staff. It is led by Vice President for Access and Engagement Paulette Dilworth.
Before 2024, Dilworth headed the UAB Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion as Vice President for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer.
During the 2024 Alabama legislative session, Act of Alabama 2024-34, sponsored by Will Barfoot, was passed and signed into law by Governor Kay Ivey. It makes it illegal for any public college to "sponsor any diversity, equity, and inclusion program or maintain any office, physical location, or department that promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion programs." It defines such programs using language taken from President Donald Trump's 2020 "Executive Order on Combating Race and Sex Stereotyping" (which was revoked by President Joe Biden on his first day in office in January 2021).
In July 2024 UAB announced that it had reviewed all applicable state and federal laws, as well as its own policies, and that it was closing its Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and opening an Office of Access and Engagement.
