Neighborhood map East Lake

The East Lake neighborhood is a neighborhood in the East Lake community of Birmingham. It occupies the large area southeast of 1st Avenue North from Wahouma, southwest of Oporto-Madrid Boulevard from South East Lake, west of London Avenue from Brown Springs, and north of South Woodlawn and Gate City.

Downey Park is the neighborhood's primary green space. Other landmarks in the neighborhood include Barrett Elementary School and Higdon Hill School. Historically, the East Lake neighborhood was the setting for the campus of Howard College, which moved to Shades Valley in 1957 and was renamed Samford University. It was also the home of the Cascade Plunge private swimming pool and Cloud Room ballroom, which operated from 1923 to the 1970s, and was redeveloped by Habitat for Humanity Greater Birmingham as the Cascade Park residential subdivision.

In 2024 the neighborhood was used as for a pilot implementation of Project Safe Streets, in which the city blocked off several streets in and out of residential sections as a means of reducing criminal activity.

The East Lake Neighborhood Association meets on the 1st Tuesday of each month at New Rising Star Baptist Church on London Avenue.
