Rendering of the UAB Biomedical Research and Psychology Building

The UAB Biomedical Research and Psychology Building is an 8-story, 228,735 square-foot building under construction on Block 238, on the northwest corner of 16th Street South and University Boulevard. It will house the UAB Department of Psychology along with research laboratories for the UAB Heersink School of Medicine. A pedestrian bridge over 16th Street will connect to Volker Hall.

When the project was approved by the University of Alabama Board of Trustees in December 2022, it was announced that it would use $76 million in federal funding, which would be combined with $29 million from the UAB College of Arts and Sciences, for an overall budget of $105 million. In January 2023 it was announced that another $76 million federal appropriation had been secured for the building in the Fiscal Year 2023 Omnibus Appropriations Bill by Senator Richard Shelby. Following the announcement, the planned 6-story, 165,000 square-foot building was expanded.

Williams Blackstock Architects designed the building, which was constructed by Brasfield & Gorrie. A groundbreaking ceremony for the project was held on what was then UAB Parking Lot 5A on June 28, 2024. A construction permit was issued for the project, based on a $190 million contract, on July 11.
