Manchester Terrace is a 12-unit apartment complex surrounding a raised terrace with four shop fronts at street level, divided by a wide stairway. It is located at 720–228 29th Street South on Block 411 in Birmingham's Lakeview District. The mixed-use complex was designed in contrasting styles. The brick and half-timbered gables of the apartment building is an English vernacular style, while the stucco-clad shops with their barrel-tiled roof parapet and circular arched openings framed with spiral columns evoke Mediterranean architecture.

The building was erected in 1927 by the Maloney Construction Company. The original complex included a 12-car garage on the alley behind the apartments. It was later demolished.

The development went through foreclosure in 1931 and was subsequently owned by the Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Company. The shop fronts remained mostly vacant through the years of the Great Depression and remained difficult to lease due to poor maintenance.
