The 1979-1980 UAB Blazers men's basketball team represented UAB as a member of the Sun Belt Conference during the 1979-80 NCAA Division I men's basketball season.
The Blazers were coached by Gene Bartow and played their home games at BJCC Coliseum in the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center.
The Blazers finished the regular season with a 16-10 overall and finished in 2nd place in the Sun Belt with a 10-2 in conference play. At the conference tournament in Charlotte, North Carolina, UAB advanced to the championship game, dispatching New Orleans (85-77) & Jacksonville (64-60) in the Quarter-Finals and Semi-Finals respectively. The Blazers faced off against Virginia Commonwealth in the Finals, losing 105-88.
In only their second season, the Blazers earned a bid to the National Invitational Tournament (NIT), losing to Southwestern Louisiana in a first round match-up in Lafayette, Louisiana.
UAB ended the season with a record of 18-12 scoring an average of 78.5 points per game while holding opponents to 72.0 points per game.
