Other local wikis
Remarks
I signed up for the New Orleans Wiki in order to add an article about a former professor of mine. Although that wiki has 678 registered users, it only has 334 articles, many of which are little more than a pile of weblinks. My edit was the first activity since early March. It got me thinking about the progress of local wikis. I have to admit I don't know much about other projects -- I just assumed they were growing like mushrooms since it seems so obvious and since people seem to like being encyclopedians. After a few minutes of looking around, though, I started to think that maybe we're in the forefront of this wave. Do ya'll have any insight into where we might stand in the local-wikiverse?

The DavisWiki may be the grandaddy, with hundreds of users and 11,601 pages listed on their "recent changes" tab. (I don't know how to determine how many are actual articles). --Dystopos 14:30, 17 April 2008 (PDT)
Advisory committee
* As mentioned in my spoken notes, I do plan to convene an advisory committee or like body, using the names proferred in March (and any others who are interested). * All I can speak of is HSVWiki.  I made a couple contributions and did some category organization (modeled on BhamWiki), but the site is not active and the owner has never contacted me.  And I'm the only registered user besides him or her.  You'd think with so much hi-tech business in town, we'd be able to support a great wiki, but until the owner of the site dedicates some work to it I guess no one else is going to make much effort to support it, including me. --Lkseitz 07:15, 21 April 2008 (PDT)

Inspirational read
:"Let's say [...] that people watch 99 percent as much television as they used to, but 1 percent of that is carved out for producing and for sharing. The Internet-connected population watches roughly a trillion hours of TV a year. That's about five times the size of the annual U.S. consumption. One per cent of that  is 100 Wikipedia projects per year worth of participation." - Clay Shirky (April 26, 2008) "Gin, Television, and Social Surplus". ==Conflicts of interest==
I have added a policy page on conflicts of interest. Suggestions for refining or improving the policy are welcome. --Dystopos 13:22, 14 May 2008 (PDT)
* Looks good to me.  Per #6, I invite others to review the article on my father, Karl Seitz.  Although I don't think he's a particularly controversial subject, it is rather embarrassing that no one else has performed edits on that page. --Lkseitz 05:56, 15 May 2008 (PDT)
**That's because there's nothing really there to edit.  It's got a little more fluff than most of our articles, but no truly unsubstantiated statements and no opinionated statements that I noticed.  For an article written by his son, it is pretty neutral in tone (IMHO).  --Wheresdib 09:21, 15 May 2008 (PDT)

Those who failed to get elected
So, we now have a lot of red links to people who ran for office, but failed to win.  I understand that some individuals might be notable enough, even in losing, to merit entries, but should we truly default to making all their names links?  As you can tell, I think that's overkill, but wondered what other opinions are held here. --Lkseitz 12:53, 27 August 2008 (PDT)

*Yeah, I have debated over what to do about these.  There's no harm in having a bunch of redlinks, but it is probably in our best interest to go ahead and unlink them as we are updating the articles.  We can always go back and link them if an article is written for them. --Wheresdib 13:08, 27 August 2008 (PDT)
:* I have nothing against redlinks myself. If ya'll want to go removing brackets I won't go putting them back in. --Dystopos 13:14, 27 August 2008 (PDT)

Streets and subdivisions
For residential streets in identifiable subdivisions, I think it would be best to start redirecting to articles on the subdivisions themselves, where there's a better prospect for meaningful content. (for example, Lucerne Boulevard should redirect to Lake Shore Estates). --Dystopos 06:55, 11 September 2008 (PDT)

GFDL -> CC-BY-SA
* Under the latest revision to the GFDL, content can safely be migrated to CC-BY-SA, which is Bhamwiki's default license (Wikipedia Signpost story). ==3rd Anniversary==
Now is the time for all good editors to come to the smorgasbord and celebrate another anniversary of Bhamwiki. March 15, 2009 falls on a Sunday. I'm open to keeping that date or moving to Friday or Saturday if that works better. I am also open to suggestions for a location, with the proviso that it should be a locally-owned establishment. As before, I plan on picking up some reasonable portion of the tab and bringing some door prizes and/or schwag. Other program suggestions will be entertained. --Dystopos 15:33, 4 February 2009 (PST)
* As that will be a "kid weekend", if we could make it a lunch or brunch that would suit me better, Saturday or Sunday, or Sunday night.  I can't do Friday or Saturday night, especially if we're going to a place that serves alcohol.  I don't care where we go.  My usuals for a lunch/brunch are Rojo and Silvertron.  ----Wheresdib 23:21, 4 February 2009 (PST)
** Doing it sometime other than Sunday night would let me avoid taking a day off work.  (Not that I really mind.)  I was going to ask my parents to watch my boys, as they'd probably be bored, but if Wheresdib is bringing his....  I was about to nominate New York Pizza, but then I remembered we did pizza last year.  Rojo or Silvertron are both good. --Lkseitz 08:50, 5 February 2009 (PST)
*** Silvertron has a Sunday brunch from 11-2. Does that meet everyone's requirements? --Dystopos 09:20, 5 February 2009 (PST)
**** Silverton at brunch sounds great to me! I'll more than likely only have my 8 yr old son with me. --Wheresdib 13:12, 5 February 2009 (PST)

* This is coming up pretty soon, and I realize now that I'll be kid free next weekend, so that means we can do it Saturday night if you would prefer.  --Wheresdib 05:12, 4 March 2009 (PST)
** Saturday night or Sunday brunch still both work for me.  I'm basing whether to bring my boys primarily on whether Wheresdib brings his, so now I guess I won't. --Lkseitz 08:29, 4 March 2009 (PST)
*** Plan on a Sunday brunch at Silvertron. I'll send out an e-mail and make arrangements. Kids are tolerated graciously. --Dystopos 20:11, 7 March 2009 (PST)
**** Thanks, but I can't guarantee my boys will tolerate the adults graciously. :-)  Hannah will be joining us, however. --Lkseitz 08:47, 9 March 2009 (PDT)

Fair use templates
I'm considering re-engineering our image templates a bit. I think we could go with one "Fair Use" template for all types of media. At the same time it's nice to be able to bring up galleries of just logos, seals, postcards, advertisements, cd covers, etc. Therefore I propose two kinds of image templates: one for copyright status (public domain, cc, fair use, by permission) and one for the type of art (logo, portrait, photograph, film still, postcard, stamp, cd cover, book cover, magazine cover, screen shot, advertisement, trading card, etc). Any discussion before I start trudging through the dirty work? --Dystopos 12:33, 16 February 2009 (PST)
* It occurs to me that some source-specific templates would be nice, too. Especially with regard to BPL Digital Archives. Maybe that template should have fields for item identifier, collection, permanent URL, etc. --Dystopos 12:36, 16 February 2009 (PST)
** These sound like good ideas!  Beyond the work to implement it with existing items, I don't see an immediate downside to splitting the templates.  Some vague thought of being annoyed at creating yet another Fair Use template crossed my mind with the post card one, but I was too busy trying to get it done to worry about it too much.  A template for the BPL images does sound like a no-brainer (as in the need, not the implementation).  I'll see what I can do when I have the time (if no one beats me to it). --Lkseitz 08:00, 17 February 2009 (PST)
*** I've done a good bit of the work, (See :Category:Seals, :Category:Postcards, etc). It wasn't as laborious as I thought it might be. --Dystopos 13:59, 9 March 2009 (PDT)
**** I finally did a couple templates for BPL images.  Thought I'd solicit feedback before going through and updating all the photos. --Lkseitz 09:41, 11 March 2009 (PDT)
***** Those look pretty cool to me. --Dystopos 10:50, 11 March 2009 (PDT)
