Zachary Barnes is the principal of Homewood High School and former principal of Hewitt-Trussville High School.
Barnes earned his bachelor's degree in education from the University of Alabama in 1996 and later earned his master's there. He earned an Administrative Certificate from the University of West Alabama in 2003, then returned to Alabama, completing his doctoral degree in 2008.
Barnes became a teacher for Tuscaloosa City Schools and was named Alabama Teacher of the Year while there. He proceeded to work his way up within the system to assistant principal, then principal, and finally Director of Graduation Success and Dropout Intervention.
In 2011, Barnes left his position as director to became principal of Hewitt-Trussville High School after Mark Kirkemier left to become principal of Headland High School in Henry County. The following year he accepted the position of principal at Homewood High School.
