The Bessemer City Council is the legislative body for the city of Bessemer, with offices in Bessemer City Hall. The body meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 10:00 AM, and on the fourth Tuesday at 7:00 PM. Myra Armstead is the Council Secretary. Councilors are elected for four-year terms.
Bessemer's Mayor-Council form of government replaced the three-member Bessemer City Commission following a 1986 decision by Judge Sam Pointer in a federal lawsuit filed on behalf of several African American plaintiffs.

The current council representatives, chosen in the 2010 Bessemer municipal election and sworn in on November 1, 2010, are:
