The A & P chain of grocery stores was owned and operated by the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company. In 1940 the chain had twelve Birmingham locations:
- 12th Street and 1st Avenue South
- Highland Avenue at 22nd Street South
- 5801 1st Avenue North, Woodlawn
- 25th Street and 1st Avenue North
- 2918 27th Street North, North Bimingham
- Avenue F and 18th Street, Ensley
- 19th Street and 4th Avenue North
- 1024 20th Street South, Five Points South
- 201 2nd Avenue, Pratt City
- Pinson Boulevard, Tarrant
- 1816 2nd Avenue, Bessemer
- 405 19th Street North, Bessemer
Additional locations opened later:
- 1729 5th Avenue North (opened 1941)
- Crestline Heights Shopping Center in Crestline Village, Mountain Brook (opened 1947)
- Gary Avenue at 49th Street in Fairfield (opened December 19, 1950)
