The Bessemer City Council is the legislative body for the city of Bessemer, with offices in Bessemer City Hall.
The current council representatives are:
- District 1: Dorothy Davidson
- District 2: Louise Alexander (re-elected 2006)
- District 3: Sarah W. Belcher
- District 4: Betty Woods
- District 5: Olivia P. Walker (through September 2006)
- District 6: Jesse Matthews (re-elected 2006)
- District 7: LaBrenda Belle Marshall (through September 2006)
Davidson is the Council President, and Belcher is the President Pro-Tem. Myra Armstead is the Council Secretary.

On August 22, 2006, Bessemer voters went to the polls to decide four council seats. Jesse Matthews held off a challenge from Dock Sott in District 3. Three races went to runoffs on September 12. In District 2, Louise Alexander kept her seat with 620 votes to Clinton Harris, Sr's 409. In District 5, Albert Soles defeated Margie Varner 444 to 343. And in District 7, Earl Cochran successfully challenged incumbent LaBrenda Marshall, 487 to 368. The new Council will be sworn in October 1, 2006.
