PEN Birmingham is a regional chapter of PEN American, itself a part of the writing advocacy organization PEN International, founded in London, England in 1921. PEN advocates for freedom of literary expression and publication, and for the protection of writers from marginalization and persecution.

The regional chapter is one of only six in the United States created as part of the "PEN Across America" initiative.

The chapter was founded in 2019 by Alina Stefanescu and Ashley Jones, who also co-founded the Magic City Poetry Festival which PEN Birmingham sponsors.
