The sumo competition at the 2022 World Games took place on July 9 and July 10 at Boutwell Auditorium. Sumo was introduced as a demonstration sport at the 2001 World Games in Akita, Japan, and the Birmingham edition marked the fifth time sumo was included as a regular event at the World Games. 48 men and 48 women qualified for the event, with 16 participants in each the lightweight, middleweight, and heavyweight competitions. The competition featured Alabama-native and Guntersville resident Andrew Roden in the men's middleweight competition.
