The Gorgas Hospital Hotel was a 50-bed hospital constructed by physician Seale Harris and named for his former commander, William Crawford Gorgas. Harris already operated a clinic and nursing home from his residence on Highland Avenue. He secured funding from the G. L. Miller Corporation to construct the new 50-bed facility which opened in 1922. During the Great Depression he rented the hospital to the Birmingham Baptist Association and it became known as the Highland Avenue Baptist Hospital in 1934.
