Cobb was the son of Lester and Pearlie Cobb of Birmingham. He excelled as an artist and musician in school and became a student leader during the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham. He attended Miles College before moving to New York. There he worked as an art director and producer for the William Esty Advertising Agency and later as a social worker at the Graham Home for Children. He and his wife, Constance, moved to Westchester County in 1970. His band, Lester Cobb Associates, played local nightclubs, parties and art openings.
In 1992 Cobb and his family relocated to Oakland, California. He still performed regularly and taught percussion at public schools as well as coaching soccer and T-ball.
Cobb died in 2009 from cancer while visiting his daughter in Connecticut. He was survived by his wife, two children and six grandchildren.
