Michael O'Connor
Richard Michael O'Connor (born January 19, 1955 in Brooklyn, New York; died January 2, 2012 in Birmingham) was the second chief of the North Shelby County Fire and Emergency Medical District.
O'Connor began his career with the Bluff Park Fire District in 1978. He moved to North Shelby in 1982 and was promoted from firefighter to driver, lieutenant, and battalion chief before succeeding Winston Boutwell as chief in 1995. As chief, O'Connor was active in promoting personnel development and training within the district and lobbying for legislation to improve fire safety statewide. He served two years as president of the Alabama Fire Chief's Association.
O'Connor, an active triathlete and marathon runner, suffered a stroke on December 31, 2011 and died at Brookwood Medical Center three days later. He was survived by his wife, Nelle and one daughter, Laura.
