Architect's rendering of Southtown Senior

Southtown Senior is a 158,384 square-foot, 143-unit apartment building constructed in 2024 as part of the Edgehill at Southtown redevelopment of the former Southtown Court public housing project in Birmingham's Southside.

The apartment building was developed jointly by the Benoit Group of Atlanta, Georgia and the Housing Authority of Birmingham District. The City of Birmingham approved the use of $1 million in Section 108 loaned funds made available by the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. The contractor for the $39 million project was Capstone Building Corp.

In addition to the 143 1- and 2-bedroom units, the building houses a community lounge, exercise room, business center, tenant storage, off-street parking, and building-wide Wi-Fi internet. The facility operates programs including monthly arts and crafts activities, health screenings, and holiday parties.

Initial rents at Southtown Senior are subsidized in part by $880,000 in direct assistance through HUD's HOME Investment Partnership, offered via the City of Birmingham.
